Basil Dignam was born in Yorkshire on October 24th 1905. He appeared in the fifty-minute Danger Man episode 'Say it with Flowers' as Drake's superior whom Drake picks up in a taxi and is then briefed on his next assignment. Basil played the role of Number 56, The Supervisor in The Prisoner episode 'Checkmate'.
He made his mark throughout his long and distinguished acting career by playing well-spoken figures of authority. He made his debut as Commander Whatley in Morning Departure and his other film credits included Quatermass Xperiment, Reach For The Sky, Brothers-in-Law, Yangtse Incident, Carry On Sergeant, Room at The Top, I'm All Right Jack, Lawrence of Arabia and Battle of Britain. He was very much in demand on the small screen too, making appearances in series such as The Protectors, The Saint, Steptoe & Son, Danger Man, Public Eye, The Champions, Randall & Hopkirk and Department S.
Dignam was married to actress Mona Washbourne and died aged 73 on January 31st 1979. |
