Danger Man Filming Locations  [Back to the homepage]

This page identifies some of the locations used during the filming of Danger man. I have added a 'now' shot showing how the locations look today, however sometimes over the years locations have altered - buildings have changed or demolished and so some will never be found. The where-abouts of these locations were obtained from the fantastic A Guide To Avengerland website.

View From the Villa  [View Episode Details]
 
Drake drives into an Italian village to find the villa pictured in the painting by Gina Scarlotti. Drakes car is actually seen driving under the Bridge House at Portmeirion, North Wales, driving towards Battery Square.

Lisa Orin arrives at a border post and introduces herself to John Drake who is also held whilst the border guards search their cars. The border is in reality the Dam on Lake Vyrnwy, North Wales.

Drake's car is stopped at a military check point and is told that he is entering a military zone. The checkpoint is on the road that surrounds Lake Vyrnwy, North Wales (north side). In the background the unusual building is the Pumphouse on the lake.

Sally, the daughter of Patrick Laurence has been kidnapped. Drake takes the place of recluse Mr Laurence and is taken in an ambulance to the derelict house where Sally is being held.

The house, now demolished was Radnor Hall, Allum Lane, Elstree. As the house was demolished shortly after the episode was filmed I can only provide this other black & white photo, taken from the archives at the Borehamwood Library. You can see it's the same house as the door and window surrounds are very distinctive. Thanks to Simon Finch for providing the information and picture.

Drake and Nikolides watch as guards patrol Ranfi's Beth Ja Brin villa. The shot shown is of the central piazza and Bristol Colonnade at Portmeirion before the Gloriette was built. Look closely and you can see the original tennis courts.

Guards patrol the Chinese jail where Ted Baker is being held. The guards are standing at the Camera Obscura tower at Portmeirion, North Wales.

Drake is smuggled into Chan Ling by fishing boat from Mankow despite the danger from patrolling guards. This is in fact the beach at Portmeirion, the watchtower is the Camera Obscura tower joined to White Horses where Patrick McGoohan and his family stayed during the filming of The Prisoner.

Drake arrives in Sicily to investigate the death of Tony Costello. This is in fact a shot of the Bell Tower taken from Battery Square at Portmeirion, North Wales.

In many episodes Drake arrives in his Mini at the office's of 'World Travel'. The World Travel building is now gone, but it was located in St Pauls Churchyard.

Drake arrives in Checkslovakia by taxi which breaks down and is pulled up in a layby. As the driver attempts to fix the car, the British Ambassador passes by and gives Drake a lift into Prague. This layby is located on the banks of Llyn Gwynant, on the A498 heading towards Snowdon, Gwynedd.

After fleeing from the sanatorium, Pearson and Drake drive to the border which is in fact the A4086 between Pen-y-Gwyryd and Capel Curig, Gwynedd, Wales (heading away from Capel Curig). Thanks to Stephen McKay for this photo!
 
Drake and Pearson stop at a cafe for a drink, but they soon attract the attention of the police and their car is sabotaged. They run into the woods and when more police arrive with tracker dogs they double back and hide under a bridge. This is Beaver Bridge, Betws-y-Coed, Wales (near the Fairy Glen Hotel).
 
After giving the police the slip by doubling back under the bridge, Drake and Pearson steal a police car and make their escape. This location is just to the left of Beaver Bridge, Betws-y-Coed, Wales (near the Fairy Glen Hotel).

Drake and Pearson head for the border in the stolen police car, but turn back as it is heavily guarded. The anti-tank blocks are on the road to the Yr Hafod Youth Hostel at Nant Ffrancon, Gwynedd (off the A5 between Bethesda and Capel Curig).
 
After turning back from the heavily guarded border, Drake looks for an alternative route. He drives the stolen police car down a hill, which is in fact a track leading from Pont Ty'n y Maes off the A5 near Bethesda, North Wales.
 
Drake and Pearson arrive at another less guarded border crossing and trick the guards by filling their car with sandbags. They then make their way into Austria across the bridge. This is Tan Aeldroch Farm, Pony-y-Pant, Conwy which is a campsite.
 
Colony Three  [View Episode Details]
 
Fuller leaves his flat on Archway Road, London and gets on a bus and is followed by Drake in his Mini (between Holmesdale Road and Cholmeley Park). Later Drake returns to take Fuller in for questioning.
 
Drake follows Fuller on the bus down Archway Road, London to the Citizens Advice Bureau which he opens. The Citizens Advice Bureau and other buildings were demolised when Archway Road was made into a dual-carridge way.
 
Janet Wells, James Randall and Drake (posing as a clerk named Fuller), arrive in Hampden New Town on a double-decker bus. They are met by Richardson outside of the 'Civic Centre' which is in reality St John's Church, South Hatfield.
 
Richardson strolls from behind the Civic Centre (St John's Church in South Hatfield) to meet the new recuits who have just arrived in Hamden New Town.
 
Richardson gives the trio a tour of Hamden New Town - The shopping centre is 'The Hilltop Shopping Precinct' in South Hatfield.
 
Richardson shows Janet Wells, James Randall and Drake around the church where Alan Bayliss is buried. This is St Andrews Church in Totteridge, North London.
 
In the churchyard, Richardson informs Janet that she will be filling Bayliss' position in the Library at Hamden New Town. Again this is St Andrews Churchyard in Totteridge, North London. The Gravestones in the churchyard are still exactly the same.
 
Leaving Janet and Randall in the churchyard, Richardson takes Drake for a look around Hamden New Town. This was filmed around Old Hatfield including what is now the Eight Bells Public House on Fore Street.
 
Richardson shows Drake the Citizens Advice Bureau in Hamden New Town, where he'll be working from now on.
 
Richardson and Drake continue the tour of Hamden New Town, which in real-life is The Hilltop Shopping Precinct' in South Hatfield.

In the opening scenes the camera pans down a transmitter mast. This is the mast at Alexander Palace which still exists today.
 
Drake visits Lassale’s house for a game of snooker. The opening shots of Lassale’s house are in reality the Aldenham buiding at Haberdashers Aske's School, Elstree.

In the opening sequences Lisa leaves the 'Good Health' shop, which was on Kinnerton Street but the area has recently been redeveloped.
 
Lisa is being followed by a Special Branch agent. He pretends to buy cigarettes on Motcomb Street, SW1. Even the two red phone boxes still exist on the left side of the road.
 
Being followed by the special agent, Lisa heads up Motcomb Street turning onto Wilton Terrace.
 
Lisa walks along the railings on Wilton Terrace before turning into West Halking Street.
 
Lisa loses the speical agent by ducking down some basement steps. These are on West Halking Street.
 
The Special Agent has lost Lisa and waits on West Halking Place.
 
Lisa goes to Drakes house on Eaton Mews North, SW1 but before knocking on his door, changes her mind.
 
Lisa heads out of the side of Eaton Mews North, SW1 but the special agent appears in his car. She runs back to drakes house.
 
Drake learns Lisa has recently been released from a mental hospital. In real life this is Oatlands Park Hotel.

An establishing shot of Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station, North Wales is used as the French Laboratory. I couldn't get close enough to get the correct angle, as I learned officials don't like strangers with cameras.

Barnares has a meeting with Mr Avvram at his mansion in Athens. This location is Littleton Park House, Shepperton Studios.
 
Don't Nail Him Yet  [View Episode Details]
 
Rawson, unknown to him being watched by M9, buys a newspaper. In the background is Admiralty Arch, The Mall, SW1.
 
Drake needs to befriend Rawson, and follows him to his local pub - the Star Tavern on Belgrave Mews West, SW1.
   
"Another ""chance meeting"" between Drake and Rawson - this time at Fulham Football Ground, SW6."
 
Rawson knows he's being followed and tries to shake them off. Here he changes taxi at Duke of Wellington Place, SW1.
 
Rawson spots Drake's reflection in the bookshop window and gives him the slip by diving into a Pub on Charlotte Place, W1.
 
Drake has lost Rawson and runs up Hanway Street, W1. After not finding Rawson, Drake comes back.
 
Drake and Rawson are taken to the airfield by Dian and Lucus. They get into a plane piloted by Dian, but Drake is able to escape with Rawson by jumping from the plane. This was filmed at Elstree Aerodrome, Hogg Lane, Elstree.

Secret papers have gone missing at Loch Broom Nuclear Power Station. Drake arrives for his 'supposed audit' before crossing over to the island 'Herta' to find a spy, long thought to be dead. In reality this is Trawsfynydd Power Station, Gwynedd which is currently being decommissioned.
 
The gates to Loch Broom Nuclear Power Station, where Drake hands his papers over are in reality the gates to a BBC broadcasting mast on the way to Penmon in Anglesey.
 
On the island Drake stays at the McKinnon house, which is located at Penmon Point, Anglesey. Penmon lighthouse is seen in the background.
 
Drake visits the Abbey to use Sutherland's dark room - this is Penmon Priory in Anglesey.

Drake and Braitwait come out of Braitwait's house to see Angus McKinnon (aka Jock Lawson) being taken into custody by two policemen. The house in the background is located in the North of Anglesey in Cemaes Bay.

Drake, taking the place of Ed Bowden is release from Wormwood Prison, Du Cane Road, London where he is promptly collected.
 
On the train to training camp Drake and the ‘tweedy gentleman’ arrive at Little Grimpton station which in reality is Maidenhead Station.
 
Drake arrives at Lyndon Manor by taxi where he meets the gatekeeper. These gates are in reality the gates on Aldenham Road to Haberdashers Aske's Boys School, Elstree.

Drake travels to Wales to find out more about George Foster. An opening shot of Britannia Bridge over the Meni Straits is shown. The bridge has changed slightly because it caught fire in 1970 and was rebuilt with iron arches as opposed to just the stone pillars.
 
The establishing shots of the church where Drakes talks to the vicar who is gardening, is the bell tower of St Andrews Church, Totteridge, North London.
 
Drake is trying to dig up the past on Lord Ammanford and talks to the old Nanny. She show's him a photograph of the Ammanford's old home, which is now a school. This is Ettington Park, Warwickshire.
 
Drake visits the Taylor Car Hire Company to enquire about George Foster. The Car Hire Building still exists on London Road, Shenley - although the pitched roof has been replaced with a flat roof. The building in the background is still pretty much the same.
 
Drake leaves the Taylor Car Hire Company with the motorcycalist giving directions. Drake drives up London Road, Shenley. The car hire building, bus stop and shop are all still there today.
 
After making his escape in a stolen police car Drake drives up Shenley Road, Boreham Wood, London.
 
Drake then turns off Shenley Road onto Theobald Road, Boreham Wood, London.
 
Drake arrives at the home of Charlie Hewitt in the stolen police car. This house is located on New Road, Shenley. It has been modified with more windows added and doors removed - but it is still recognisable.

Keith Turnbull is kidnapped from the airport and taken to the East German Embassy in Geneva where he is held in 'a room in the basement'. Drake enters the embassy on the pretext of obtaining a visa, but is really casing the joint. The building is No 3, Wadham Gardens near Swiss Cottage. The trees have grown so I couldn't get the same angles - but the house is unmistakable.

A nervous Charles Glovers looks from the window of his house on Church Row, Hampstead where a plain clothes agent is watching him.
 
Glover emerges from his house on Church Row, Hampstead. Later a surveillance van is parked outside the Glover house and Drake listens in on Mrs Glovers conversations.
 
Glover crosses over the road to the postbox and posts a 'goodbye' letter to his wife. St John's Church of Hampstead is seen in the background.
 
Glover leaves his office in a rush, hurries down the 'Clive Steps' and hails a cab on Horseguards Road.
 
Drake arranges for Mr and Mrs Glover to meet in a spot away from the hotel so they can talk about his defection without the interference of Nicos. This is the Miner’s Bridge over Afon Llugwy, Betws y Coed, North Wales.

The beach shots where Nicos leaves in his boat to collect Charles Glover and later where Drake's dinghy is overturned by Nicos's speedboat were filmed at Gallow's Point, Beaumaris, Anglesey.
 
Nicos convinces the Glovers that they cannot return home and drives them to a crossing point from Greece to Albanian. They travel along a narror road and across a bridge which is Pont Ty'n y Maes off the A5 near Bethesda, North Wales.
 
Nicos abandons the car before taking the Glovers by foot to border. He leaves the car on the track leading from Pont Ty'n y Maes off the A5 near Bethesda, North Wales.
 
Nicos and the Glover's are on route to the Albanian border, follwed by Drake in a stolen van. The party climb into the hills and are able to see Albanian guards on the border. These shots were filmed above the car park at Nant Ffrancon, Gwynedd.
 
Have a Glass of Wine  [View Episode Details]
 
Drake waits in his Mini watching the flat of Kathleen Mary Martin. After contacting HQ he has a suitcase delivered to him and when Kathleen leaves the house he follows her. This house is Fitzroy Lodge, on The Grove, of Highgate, London

Suzanne and Lamaze arrive at an airfield where Lamaze will take a plane to Paris. Unknown to either of them Drake is in the cockpit and takes him to London. This was filmed at Elstree Aerodrome, Hogg Lane, Elstree.
 
The Mirror's New  [View Episode Details]
 
Drake and Esser follow Bierce in Bonn as he arrives to deliver some important papers. This location is Swiss Cottage Library and Swimming Baths, Adelaide Road NW3. However it was radically redeveloped in 2003 and so I have had to use an old photo.
 
Drake and Esser follow Bierce to the flat of Penny. Bierce calls his wife from a nearby phone box before entering. The following morning after Bierce leaves, Drake enters posing as an encyclopaedia salesman. This was filmed at Garrick Court, Green Lane, Edgware, Middlesex, HA8 8BH. The Black Book  [View Episode Details]
 
Drake arrives in his Mini at the home of General Carteret where he learns of the blackmail of Sir Noel Blanchard. This is Littleton Park House in the grounds of Shepperton Studios.

After Sir Noel Blanchard has dropped off the money Drake tracks its location (using his type writer) and is seen driving over Desborough Cut Upper Bridge (off Walton Lane). The railings have recently been modified to conform to health and safety regulations, but are still very much the same.
 
One blackmail victim delivers his payment by throwing it from a boat, after which Simone apears from under Desborough Cut Upper Bridge (off Walton Lane). Shortly after, Drake appears on top on the bridge having been watching Simone.
 
Another one of Simone's blackmail victims throws payment from above Walton Bridge, to Simone waiting below. Again Drake isn't far away, this time disguised as a chauffer working under the bonnet of his car.
 
English Lady Takes Lodgers  [View Episode Details]
 
Establishing stock footage of Cascais, Portugal used at the beginning of the episode.
 
Drake posing as a photographer and Emma Stanway as a reporter go to Lisbon Airport to perform the 'handbag switch' to smuggle top secrets. This is Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, San Juan, Puerto Rico (originally called Isla Verde International Airport until It was renamed in 1985).

The building used as the Defence Ministry is Poplar House, Sunbry-on-Thames. David Nicholas of BP writes “From having worked at Sunbury in the late 80’s/early 90’s I know that building well. It was called ‘Poplar House’ and was where the senior management of the site, which was then BP’s main research centre, were housed. I didn’t visit it often. The whole research centre has now been renamed ‘The International Centre for Business and Technology’ and that building was redeveloped unrecognisably a few years ago.”

In the opening sequences we see the corner of Wardour Street, London.
 
John Drake takes a taxi to the offices of “Little Gems” which is on Wardour Street, London. This street has been heavily redeveloped since filming.
 
Drake meets with Kronenberg at a park. Although the fountain and gardens have been demolished the exact location is known because the side of Littleton Park House can be seen in the background when Drake and Kronenberg are both seated on the bench.
 
To Our Best Friend  [View Episode Details]
 
In the opening scenes we see the bridge in St James’s Park, London. Here Drake makes contact with his superior with the aid of a row of three telephone boxes.
 
Say it with Flowers  [View Episode Details]
 
After Wallace has left his sister's house (to leave for Switzerland), a flower delivery man drops off some flowers and fakes the sister’s accidental death. Her house is located on Stewart Avenue, Shepperton Green.
 
A Home Office official takes a taxi driven by Drake to brief him on his trip to Switzerland. We see this taxi driving by Asprey's on New Bond Street, London (corner of Grafton Street and New Bond Street).
 
Drake drops the man off at the crossroads at (High Street, Church Terrace, Thames Street and Hepworth Way) in Walton-on-Thames.
 
Wallace arrives at Die Brajanska Klinik, Heibeck and is welcomed by a nurse.
 
The hotel in Heibeck visited by both Wallace and Drake is Sankt Gilgen Rathaus, Austria.

In the opening sequences two young children are playing in the grounds of a virus research centre. This is the backlot at Sheppeton Studios. The gates and green houses are no longer there but the water tower remains.
 
Drake arrives in his Mini and drives in through the gates of the virus research unit. These gates are the entrance to Shepperton Studios on Laleham Road and Littleton Lane. The gates have recently been replaced.
 
Drake arrives at the Hotel due Chateau, Vieuxville where Colin Ashby is stayling.This is Littleton Park House in the grounds of Shepperton Studios.
 
Drake attaches a tracking device to the car of Barbier which is parked at the rear of his antiques shop. When Barbier leaves Drake follows him. This is the rear of Littleton Park House in the grounds of Shepperton Studios.

Drake arrives in his car at the Palace of Westminster, and parks near St Stephens Entrance. He then goes in to interview Lord Gandon as secret information known only to him has been leaked.

Claudia Jordan telephones Lady Brassington to obtain references on John Drake, but Edwards is in place at Belgrave Square, London, to intercept the call.

The Thames Court Hotel, Towpath, Shepperton is where Standfast waves goodbye to Leanka before driving away in his car. Soon after he is ambushed, drugged and kidnapped.

After leaving Eddie Gelb, Drake goes to the safe house run by Madame Nandina to try and obtain the secret papers which Laprade now has. The house is in fact Bulkeley House, Middle Hill, Englefield Green, Surrey.

In this episode, Drake goes undercover as a DJ on a Pirate Radio Station. This location is Red Sands Fort, located off the coast at Whitstable, North Kent. During the filming of the episode, the fort was home to Radio 390 - a real pirate radio station!
