Driving to northern Scotland and taking a boat from Mallaig, Drake arrives in the Outer Hebrides. He learns from the local fishermen that a house on one of the islands is owned by a Portuguese, and persuades one of them to land him there. Using a skeleton key Drake manages to break into the house through the kitchen - but he is discovered there and taken into the study by the housekeeper and his daughter.
